Magneto-Resistive Eddy Current

The United States currently has more than 2 million miles of gas pipeline, and nearly 50% of it is more than 50 years old. RMD’s Magneto-Resistive Eddy Current (MREC) inspection technology accurately detects defects in pipes with repeatability. MREC offers the following advantages over MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) techniques:

  • Heavy magnets are not required
  • Smaller, lighter-weight, less power hungry non-destructive testing system
  • Defects can be detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio near welds
  • Probe response is proportional to defect size

Current estimates for pipeline inspection using MFL technique is US $1M per 5 miles. RMD’s MREC system has the potential to reduce this cost to less than US $250K per 5 miles.
