Space Radiation Sensors

For long duration space flights such as to the Moon and Mars, NASA will require improved instrumentation for space crew dosimetry.  Real-time dose rate monitoring for an astronaut is necessary to ensure crew safety against potentially hazardous solar-particle events.

The complexity of human space flight requires reliable, fault-tolerant equipment capable of providing real-time dose readings during a mission, which is not feasible with the existing technology, especially during extravehicular activity.

Real-time monitoring is important for low-Earth orbiting spacecraft and interplanetary space flight to alert the crew when solar particle events increase the particle flux of the spacecraft environment.
